Head of Bacterial Projects:


Reporting to the VP, Global Health R&D Vaccines Head and GVGH Institute Director, the Head of Bacterial Projects will provide strong leadership for the discovery and development portfolio for GVGH to identify and advance new bacterial vaccine assets to build and maintain a rich vaccine pipeline that meets important medical needs in Global Health.

The Head of Bacterial Projects will interact with other groups in Global Health, One R&D and throughout GSK R&D.

S/he is responsible for creating and maintaining a network of collaborations with world-class scientists who will bring cutting edge technology and ideas to bear on difficult vaccine pre-clinical and clinical development problems, thereby attracting external funding and accelerating the availability of important new vaccine solutions.

Additionally, the Head of Bacterial Projects will lead and engage in productive cross-functional relationships with various teams within the organization such as Pre-clinical R&D and Clinical R&D teams, the Clinical Evidence Generation platform, Medical (incl. medical affairs, Safety/Pharmacovigilance, Publications, Health Economics), technical development and Regulatory platforms. All of this will be based on and in support of the RDC and wider R&D and GH strategy.


In this role you will:


  • Provide effective and inspiring leadership, as well as stewardship, of PL (c. 36 heads in direct report, more in matrix) Support professional development and qualification of staff, to expand the capacity, capability, and consistency of working. Enable collaboration with PL with the GSK community, to maintain a consistent way of working.
  • Manage talent recruitment, development, and review across the team. Be instrumental in developing talent in GH, as well as giving input, guidance, and support for development of talents. Lead, coach, develop, and retain PLs, setting project related objectives and personal development goals and conducting annual performance evaluation of direct reports.
  • Must be able to inspire and motivate research scientists, but also to communicate the vision and direction convincingly and with credibility to partners across R&D, across GH, Vaccines and GSK. Must understand the value of building bridges beyond the discovery/research community.
  • Shape the overall strategy of the longterm Infectious disease vaccines portfolio and leverage the most advanced and innovative technologies to enable a sustainable pipeline for the future and position GSK at the forefront of new vaccines for the future.
  • To discover, drive and deliver world class prophylactic and therapeutic infectious disease vaccine programs from first innovation to clinical proof of concept and ensuring handover of most promising assets to partners.
  • Ensure appropriate and timely support to creation and protection of GSK intellectual property in collaboration with Global Patents partners.
  • Create and maintain a network of collaborations with worldclass scientists who will bring cutting edge technology and ideas to bear on difficult vaccine development problems.
  • Bring discovery and early portfolio issues/questions/decisions to appropriate governing and advisory bodies and ensure appropriate discovery representation at (as applicable) Toxicology Working Group, Safety Review Team, Regulatory teams, and other relevant teams.
  • Ensure continuous education and update on changes and innovation in relevant basic research disciplines to stay on top of what the scientific community and regulatory authorities are expecting form a toptier vaccine company.

Basic Qualifications:


We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • At least 10-years' experience acquired in industry (pharmaceuticals or biotech's), government laboratories, CRO's, and academic settings.
  • Must have at least 7years leadership experience and be working within a matrix organization dealing with multiple and diverse interfaces.
  • Strong scientific background as evidenced by strong publication record and international standing required to recruit toptier vaccinologists / immunologists and to attract collaborators.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:_
  • MD, DVM qualifications with the ability to independently research.
  • Communication and influencing skills to communicate the strategy within the company.
  • Ability to understand and lead the discovery and preclinical development of new vaccine assets by Discovery teams.
