We are looking for a Mission Data Expert to work from ESRIN's premises in Frascati, Italy.

This activity is intended to support the Heritage Space Programme activities, especially related to the ESA EO Heritage Data and Information holdings consolidation and valorization support, recovering and improving of any relevant material of the old Earthwatching programme, retrieval and transcription of heritage mission (e.g. Landsat archives).


About the programme and location:


ESA's Heritage Space Programme preserves, keeps accessible and curates 40+ years of Earth Observation heritage data from more than 45 satellite missions and from ESA dedicated EO campaigns.

Tasks and Activities:


The scope of work will include:

  • Verification of heritage dataset completeness with respect to theoretical temporal and geographical coverage and identification of missing data needed to fill identified gaps.
  • Identifying missing data from ESA National and Foreign stations or international organizations to be repatriated to further complete the ESA Heritage Missions Master Datasets or to generate long time series of data by implementing the necessary actions, in coordination with the Heritage Missions Manager and Operations Manager, and coordinating consolidation and/or reformatting activities as needed.
  • Supporting the recovery of unique heritage data through transcription of heritage media (e.g. DLTs).
  • Proactive identification of heritage dataset at preservation risk.
  • Inventory and analysis of existing European coverages/mosaics (e.g. from Sentinels), identification of heritage missions from ESA and third party organizations (e.g. NASA, USGS), which may be used to extend the existing coverages back in time.
  • Extending and updating the Tropforest collection.
  • Definition, prioritization and generation of Regional Thematic Long Time Data Records (RTLTDR).
Examples of RTLTDR, which should be based on the combination of Optical and SAR data from ESA heritage data holdings and possibly national missions, are the following:


  • Over European cities, coastal zones, forests, hydrology and flood risk areas.
  • Over seismic areas and selected volcanoes.
  • Over high latitude areas.
  • Over Glaciers and mountain areas.
  • Promoting collaboration with universities and students for data and image processing.
  • Retrieval of Landsat and other data.
  • Uploading Charter activations in the Charter Operational system.
  • Supporting Earthwatching Program material recovery, consolidation and cleaning.

Skills and Experience:


The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • At least 5 years of working experience in earth observation operations and international multi-cultural environment.
  • Good knowledge of Earth Observation data and implications in the setting of an image processing chain.
  • Knowledge of Data Management lifecycle: Ingestion, Transformation, Analytics, Sharing and Governance.
  • Experience in setting environment for data orchestration, processing and preservation.
  • Proactiveness, good communication skills.
  • Result oriented.
  • Capacity to work autonomously.
  • Capacity to generate good documentation.
  • Ability to complete complex tasks with mínimal guidance and to work and cooperate with others.
  • Ability to coordinate end to end activities and teams.
  • Ability to take ownership and manage end to end problems.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:

  • Proven operational experience in managing archival, storage, transcription, image processing and reprocessing services.
