Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through the FAO Strategic Framework by supporting the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.


The Language Support Branch (CSGL) enables Multilingualism of the Organization by providing interpretation, translation, and terminology goods and services in all FAO languages across the span of corporate governance, normative, operational and communication functions.

CSGL also supports the provision of FAO products in local languages and is responsible for quality language assurance within the Organization.

The position is located in
CSGL at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.


Reporting Lines
The Terminology Officer reports to reports to the Coordinator, Language Support Branch. He/she acts independently in routine matters. Supervision received is focused on the strategies for developing new Terminology projects and quality of the work performed.


Technical Focus

The Terminology Officer will be responsible for the overall coordination of terminology activities of the Organization, the preparation and pre-processing of documents for translation and the follow-up on translation workflow.


Key Results

The Terminology Officer interacts with a wide variety of colleagues within the work unit and with clients within the Organization, providing terminology services.

He/she also connects with International Organizations and/or Institutions to develop common terminology projects.


Key Functions

  • Coordinate the production of terminology and glossaries at corporate level ensuring a controlled dissemination of these resources;
  • Ensure compatibility and interoperability with automated document processing methods, translation tools, international standards and other FAO systems;
  • Represent the Organization on terminological matters and establish partnerships with International Organizations and/or Institutions to develop common terminology projects ;
  • Provide the translation groups with reference material following requests submitted to the Service by using computerassisted translation (CAT) tools, document repositories and advanced research on Internet;
  • Extract new terminology form the major publications issued at FAO;
  • Conduct linguistic research in consultation with language staff and technical divisions to solve problems of technical terminology,
  • Establish and maintain interagency liaison on terminology and reference issues; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Specific Functions

  • Promote the efficient dissemination of terminology throughout the Organization and the coherent use of terminology across FAO Official Documentation and products issued at FAO;
  • Contribute to the timely submission, processing, issuance and distribution of documentation, as well as on the overall output of the work unit.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced University Degree in one of the following: Linguistics, Translation or Management/Business Administration with a specialization in languages.
  • Five years of relevant experience in translation or terminology/lexicography of which at least two years in terminology, reference or computerassisted translation work.
  • Working knowledge (proficient level C) of English and of one between French or Spanish. Limited knowl
