Organizational Setting

The Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) promotes and facilitates the sustainable development of the livestock sector, integrating scientific and technical expertise and policy advice.

It hosts technical networks in areas of animal health, genetics, feed and animal husbandry and provides analysis, policy dialogue (including intergovernmental bodies) and technical assistance.

It also supports emergency responses, mostly in animal health.

The Livestock Innovation, Climate and Post-harvesting Solutions Branch (NSAL) provides livestock sector analysis with a particular focus on poverty reduction, climate change and resource use, and animal, human and environmental health.

It provides policy support and guidance to countries and stakeholders in the livestock sector, and facilitates policy dialogue among stakeholders.

The position is located in the Livestock Innovation, Climate and Post-harvesting Solutions Branch (NSAL) of the Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.


Reporting Lines

The Livestock Policy Officer (Operations Manager, Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock) reports to the Chief, Livestock Innovation, Climate and Post-harvesting Solutions Branch, NSAL.


Technical Focus

The Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) is a partnership of livestock sector stakeholders committed to the sustainable development of the sector.

The aim of GASL is to build consensus on the path towards sustainability and catalyse coherent and collective practice change through dialogue, consultation and joint analysis.


Its focus areas include:

provision and development of a governance mechanism for an effective global policy dialogue on sustainable livestock; boosting the resource mobilization to strengthen the capacity of the Global Agenda to fully operationalize its objectives in promoting the analysis, development, transfer and dissemination of policy recommendations, and technologies to improve livestock sustainability; provision of stakeholders with the necessary support to adequately participate in the Multi-stakeholder Partnership (MSP) process; promotion of North-South, South-South and triangular regional and international cooperation on access and sharing knowledge; improvement of the coordination among similar existing mechanisms, in particular at the international level.

Comprehensive technical and policy expertise to support the planning, development and implementation of divisional programmes, projects, products and services in accordance with divisional objectives and the FAO Strategic Framework.


Key Functions

  • Plans and leads components of multidisciplinary teams, leads and/or participates on Organizationwide, crossdivisional committees, project teams and working groups and/or provides specialized expertise on technical networks and/or international technical policy and standard setting bodies.
  • Develops technical, analytical, monitoring and reporting frameworks and related methodologies, tools, systems and databases, etc. to support the planning, implementation/delivery and monitoring of programmes of work, projects, products and/or services.
