ABOUT US

At IIT we work enthusiastically to develop human-centered Science and Technology to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges of our times and transfer these technologies to the production system and society.

Our Genoa headquarters are strictly interconnected with the other 11 centers around Italy and two outstations based in the US.

We promote excellence in basic and applied research such as neuroscience and cognition, humanoid technologies and robotics, nanotechnology, materials for a truly multidisciplinary scientific experience.

OUR TEAM

You will work in a multicultural environment where material scientists, physicists, chemists, and biologists closely interact with robotic, mechatronic, and electronic engineers, collaborating, contaminating each other, and expanding their expertise to carry out common research.

The research carried out at Smart Materials focuses on developing new composite materials and devices by combining biopolymers and natural polymers with organic and inorganic micro or nanofillers.

Since polymers are the main building blocks of the developed structures, natural, bioderived, and biodegradable polymers are mainly used to develop novel composite materials with accurately modulated properties, but at the same time with mínimal environmental impact.

The group has developed a wide variety of techniques and owns state-of-the-art instrumentation for developing and characterizing composite systems and devices.

The iCub Tech Facility's main objectives are to continue the development of the humanoid robotic platforms iCub and R1 and to provide support to Research Lines and external labs using our robots.

The iCub Tech Facility is a multidisciplinary team of around 30 members composed of engineers, software developers, and technicians.

The iCub facility has a comprehensive approach to robotics, including mechanical and electronic design, power sources, sensor development (e.g., tactile, cameras), control, leveraging advanced and fast prototyping design methodologies (e.g., model-based system engineering), and integrating new technologies provided by other IIT Units (e.g., Smart Materials).

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Design of conductive inks for large area coatings techniques such as spray coating or screen printing. The inks will be made of degradable materials only.
  • Engineering of the inks to make sensors based on capacitive or piezoresistive feedback mechanisms to sensitize iCub hands, arms, and feet. The sensors will be fully degradable at a specific rate under controlled conditions (seawater or soil degradation).
  • Characterize electromechanically the inks, the coatings, and the sensors.
  • Characterize and test the developed sensors on Robotic Platforms of IIT such as iCub.
  • Present the results in periodic internal meetings and possibly at international conferences.
  • Publish the results in highimpact peerreview scientific journals.
  • Protect the created intellectual property by patents.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Being a bachelor or master student or being freshly graduated in one of the following areas: Physics, Materials Science, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Chemistry, and similar disciplines.
  • The ability to properly report, organize and publish research data.
  • Good spoken and written English.

WE WILL BE IMPRESSED WITH THESE BONUS REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

  • Experience/interest in the development of biocomposites and inks.
  • Experience/interest in the development of tactile/strain sensors.
  • Experience/interest with morphological spectroscopic and electrical characterization techniques.
  • Experience/interest with biobased and biodegradable materials.
  • A publication record.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary for international standards
  • Private health care coverage
  • Wide range of staff discounts

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?

  • An equal, inclusive and multicultural environment ready to welcome you with open arms. Discrimination is a big NO for us
  • We like contamination and encourage you to mingle and discover what other people are up to in our labs
  • If paperwork is not your piece of cake, we got you There is a specialized team working to help you with that, especially during your relocation.
  • If you are a startupper or a businessminded person, you will find some exceptionally gifted professionals ready to nurture and guide your attitude and aspirations.
  • If you want your work to have a real impact, in IIT you will find an innovative and stimulating culture that drives our mission to contribute to
