Everyone who works for FAO is required to adhere to the highest standards of integrity and professional conduct, and to uphold FAO's values:

  • FAO, as a Specialized Agency of the United Nations, has a zero-tolerance policy for conduct that is incompatible with its status, objectives and mandate, including sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, abuse of authority and discrimination:

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through FAO Strategic Framework by supporting the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, for _better production_, _better nutrition_, _a _better environment,_ and _a better life_, leaving no one behind.

Organizational Setting

The Partnerships and UN Collaboration Division (PSU) is FAO's hub to ensure rights-based and sustainable development for all, leaving no one behind.

We build transformative partnerships and proactively engage with key stakeholders, including family farmers, Indigenous Peoples, parliamentarians, academia, research institutions, UN organizations and civil society.

We drive a people-centred approach through technical support, capacity development, policy advice and inclusive dialogue.

Within FAO, the FAO Indigenous Peoples Unit (PSUI) in PSU Division, is the responsible Unit for the implementation of the 2010 FAO Policy on Indigenous Peoples, providing technical support and working with other technical units in Headquarters and FAO regional and country offices

PSUI main objectives are:
1. Implement the FAO Policy on Indigenous Peoples; 2. Provide technical advice to other FAO technical divisions in integrating Indigenous Peoples into their work; 3. Advocate, influence key policy processes and open spaces of dialogue between decision makers and Indigenous Peoples within FAO's mandate.

The FAO Policy on Indigenous Peoples, aligns FAO ́s work with the 2007 UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) is at the core of both the FAO Policy and UNDRIP.

In order to comply with UNDRIP, main donors and UN agencies have incorporated FPIC in their corporate policies, project cycles, and safeguards as a prerequisite when working with Indigenous Peoples.

FAO is no exception and since 2015, FPIC is a prerequisite in all FAO projects and programmes involving Indigenous Peoples.

FPIC is one of the seven pillars of FAO's work programme with Indigenous Peoples implemented by PSUI and is also included in FAO's Environmental and Social Safeguards, project cycle, and Programme and Project Review Committee (PPRC).

In FAO programmes and projects involving Indigenous Peoples, compliance with FPIC standards and process is a prerequisite during the design, formulation, implementation and monitoring in FAO projects.

In 2016, PSUI and partner organizations jointly developed a practitioners manual and training course on how to incorporate FPIC into the work of each respective organization.

Over the years the number of projects requiring FPIC processes in FAO have increased exponentially due to the importance of climate related funding.

Within this context, the FPIC Technical Officer will provide technical advice at corporate level on FPIC to support the implementation of the FAO Policy on Indigenous Peoples and FAO's compliance with UNDRIP.

The position is located in the Indigenous People Unit (PSUI) within PSU and based at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
