OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Founded in 1964 by the late Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam and located in Trieste (Italy), the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) seeks to accomplish its mandate by providing scientists from developing countries with the continuing education and skills that they need to enjoy long and productive careers.


Under overall guidance from the Senior Coordinator (Research & Partnerships) and under the supervision of the Research Scientist coordinating the Unit, the incumbent will carry out research in one of the fields of the Unit, provide mentoring to post-doctoral fellows, visitors and students and serve as their scientific supervisor if needed, and participate in the organization of activities and in the selection of applicants to ICTP programmes and activities related to the Unit.


Essential responsibilities include:

Long Description


Scientific Research:

Assist the supervisor by providing scientific and technical input in the definition of research and training projects. Implement research projects related to own field of expertise;
Provide mentoring to post-doctoral fellows and to Associates, visitors or fellows that collaborate on these research projects and serve as their scientific supervisor as needed;
Report on the results of the research at major international meetings.


Scientific Organization and Outreach:

Contribute to strengthening collaboration with scientists from developing countries and identify their scientific needs in areas related to own area of expertise and formulate appropriate recommendations for incorporation within ICTP programmes, in cooperation with the Unit coordinator;
Participate in the organization of ICTP seminars, schools, workshops, conferences in own field or in closely related fields;

Participate in the organization of ICTP external activities, predominantly in developing countries, in own field of research that is of interest to the outreach aims of the Unit and more generally to the mission of the ICTP.


Administrative responsibilities:


Organize scientific and training activities and necessary support to researchers in one of the STI Labs to ensure its smooth operation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
Advanced University degree (Master's Degree or equivalent) in Physics, Engineering, or related disciplines


WORK EXPERIENCE
A minimum of 2 years of professional research experience in one of the following fields:
Advanced Scientific Instrumentation for particle physics experiments and experimental multidisciplinary research;
Ionospheric Physics, Ionospheric Modelling and Space Weather.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

Ability to collaborate effectively within a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
Good analytical skills, ability to collect, synthesize and analyze information from various sources;
Ability to communicate effectively on complex technical and scientific issues.


LANGUAGES
Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken).


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

WORK EXPERIENCE
Relevant professional research experience;
Experience in the design, implementation of scientific projects;
Experience in the teaching and/or mentoring of undergraduate or postgraduate student;
Experience in the coordination of scientific training programmes.


LANGUAGES
Knowledge of Italian;
Knowledge of another official UNESCO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish).

UNESCO's salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.

The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 50,377.00 US $.
