Utilizing a Renewable Power Generator (USB-based)
Whether it's a solar panel or a rigged hamster wheel, you can make a first step in harnessing your power for your electronics and any other device that utilizes a USB port. You don't need to be super tech-savvy though some familiarity with basic electronics would be very handy. This short list involves devices that can be charged via a USB port, and it is assumed that you possess the corresponding cable. Also, the renewable power generator has at least one USB port as an outlet and can provide an electric current through it consistently.
1. Charge your phone. This use case is probably the lowest-hanging fruit and involves the device you use the most. As long as your phone can be charged by a USB cable, the game is on! Note, however, that overcharging certain phones can be a liability, at least for the phone's battery, since it can shorten its life.
2. Charge your tablet. This use case may take longer, but it's possible. It may even be a better value-add considering that it takes a greater charge, and with moderate usage, this charge can last for a while (my tablet, for example, lasts about 7-10 days as I rarely use its Wi-Fi antenna).
3. Charge laptop computer (!). Not all laptops qualify, but there are cases where you can charge a laptop via a USB port. Naturally, it may take up all the power your generator can muster, and the charging may take a while.
4. Charge a spare battery. This use case is probably the best one out there since it enables you to charge your phone, tablet, etc., at a later time. USB-powered batteries are commonplace and an excellent solution for when you are on the go. It may take a while to charge it, so patience is of the essence.
5. Charge your Mi-Fi device and any other electronics that have a rechargeable battery. A mobile internet router (Mi-Fi) is probably the latest and greatest innovation in internet connectivity. Although it's not super new, nowadays, it's a viable alternative. Naturally, such a device is designed to be portable, so it's powered by a small battery that needs constant recharging. Fortunately, this makes it an ideal use case for a renewable energy generator.
What other uses can you think of for utilizing a renewable power source? Let me know in the comments below. Cheers!
