As a Purchasing Team Leader at John Crane, you will be responsible for leveraging the total company spend on Direct Materials for the entities in scope.


Your primary focus will be to manage the supply chain effectively to achieve improved safety, quality, delivery, and cost efficiency.

Additionally, you will champion compliance with Smiths Group PLC policies and work towards satisfying John Crane's internal customers on various projects.

In this role, you will contribute to and execute a global strategic supply chain vision and methodology to support John Crane's goals and gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.


Leading, coaching, and mentoring a diverse team will be essential in creating an inclusive, high-performance culture within your area of responsibility.

The role is based in Solaro, with the opportunity to work from home two days per week.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Accountable for execution of direct materials and subcontract purchasing in line with Smiths Group PLC Code of Conduct, ensuring that a professional and consistent approach is taken in relation to all supplier relationships
  • Ensuring approval of Purchase Orders in line with the Delegation of Authority policy and approval process
  • Ensure the timely and efficient processing and acknowledgement of purchase orders and MRP action messages (Order, Expedite, De-Expedite, Cancel) or purchase requisitions to fulfil the material requirements of the operation by the Solaro purchasing teams
  • Monitoring supplier performance and follow the Global sourcing strategy
  • Develop and maintain a regional procedure to manage and track indirect costs
  • Define and implement a supplier development process including classification of vendors with onwards performance measurement
  • Coordinate with purchasing teams within Europe to promote standardization
  • Update and maintain the purchasing procedure following best practice according to Smiths Excellence System
  • Build and maintain relationships with new and existing suppliers
  • Negotiate contracts, improved prices and terms of business with suppliers and review opportunities to make business savings utilizing negotiation and procurement best practice tools and methods
  • Control Direct material costs and achieve savings as per annual targets
  • Develop the purchasing team skills and capabilities with a clear succession plan
  • Research and evaluate areas of opportunity and deliver a continuous pipeline of costout projects
  • Develop ideas to improve operational efficiency, add value and support continuous improvement culture and personal accountability in area of responsibility.

The Individual

  • Diploma or University Degree in a Mechanical field would be an advantage,
  • Proven experience working in a purchasing department is essential,
  • Experience in procurement within a manufacturing company is essential, preferably related to the Oil & Gas markets, with knowledge of specific qualification requirements (PPAP),
  • Experience in leading diverse teams is essential,
  • Fluent in English, written and spoken, is essential,
  • Experience in technical specification and selection of vendors, including material and product knowledge,
  • Member of CIPS and/or APICS and/or CILT (or any other professional procurement or supply chain body) is an advantage,
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver actual cost savings or other efficiency benefits within an organization would be advantageous,
  • SAP knowledge would be highly beneficial
