    EMBL is Europe's life sciences laboratory – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology.

    It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome.

    Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer.

    EMBL Rome hosts six independent research groups addressing fundamental questions in the area of epigenetics and neurobiology and operates four core facilities that provide key research support.

    EMBL Rome shares its research campus with the Italian National Research Council (CNR) Institute for Biochemistry and Cell Biology (IBBC).

    In Italy, EMBL employs approximately 90 people.
    The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) stands at the forefront of innovation in biological research. Renowned for our leadership in genomics, we offer an environment enriched with cutting-edge research, technology development, and advanced services. As part of the newly launched Data Science Centre ( within the EMBL Scientific Programme, we seek to recruit a dynamic and skilled genomics data scientist. The role will be pivotal to shaping integrated genomics data workflows and advancing data FAIRification practices.

    Your role The successful candidate will work closely with research and service groups at EMBL Rome, Heidelberg, Barcelona, and EMBL-EBI to contribute to the development of a local and pan-EMBL strategy for genomics, including management, workflows and core training.

    While the position is based at EMBL Rome, you will be a fully supported and integrated member of the EMBL Data Science Centre working across its European sites.


    Your duties will include:
    Playing a key role in developing both local and pan-EMBL strategies for managing, processing, and utilizing genomics data
    Ensuring that FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles are embedded in our data handling processes
    Contributing to onboarding and training of research staff at EMBL Rome to support their data management and analysis needs
    Facilitating communication and seamless data flow between EMBL scientists and genomics platforms, which may include travel between EMBL sites.
    Continually exploring new methods, pipelines and technologies to implement across EMBL initiatives within the genomics field
    Contributing to access pipelines for human cohort and biobank data
    Grading: 4,5,6; depending on qualifications and experience (monthly salary starting from 2.764,99 EUR after tax + other paid benefits)

    We seek a team player with relevant scientific and technical expertise ready to learn and take responsibility for facilitating data science initiatives and research workflows.

    The ideal candidate would have a degree in a relevant discipline with multiple years of bioinformatics experience, and enjoy collaborative interactions across research areas.


    Specifically, we seek candidates with:


    Experience building and executing workflows that may include transcriptomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, spatial-omics and single-cell applications, particularly using Snakemake and/or Nextflow.

    Excellent command of R, Python, and/or Julia.
    Experience in managing databases and data resources to enable smooth user access and workflows
    Strong abilities in cross-disciplinary collaboration, communication, and training

    The successful candidate is a motivated self-starter with a proven ability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment, and with excellent communication and organizational skills.

    A high standard of written and spoken English is mandatory. Italian language skills are a plus, but not required. The successful candidate would be expected to develop a sufficient understanding of (epi)genomics data from a computational viewpoint.
    You might also have Experience in providing support or pipelines within the Galaxy platform. An interest in facilitating core training for '-omics' data science.

    A double background in computational science and experimental biology would be valued, as would experience working with image processing or human cohort data pipelines.
