About the role
The Italian country counsel manages the legal department of the AIG group based in Italy.
The legal department looks after the implementation of Italian laws and regulation in the Italian operations which mainly include the Italian branch of AIG Europe S.A.
and insurance agency AIG Advisors S.r.l.The responsibilities for this role include:
- Coordinate the legal function for the Italian operations, managing legal risk for the Italian operations and support local management in preserving the compliance of the company with applicable laws and regulations;
- Provide legal advice and support on general insurance law, insurance contract law, insurance distribution related questions, insurance regulatory issues; including reviewing insurance contracts, and distribution schemes;
- Advise on local issues including corporate, employment, data protection and other areas of law;
- Provide transactional support in terms of legal, legislative or litigation risk analysis; advise management on business development, negotiation, structuring and drafting of agreements, review of policy wording and amendments;
- Provide advice to management on Italian and European laws and regulations impacting local operations. Work with management to determine the legal options and issues that impact operational planning so as to enhance the contribution of the country operation;
- Monitor and manage regulatory relationships, in coordination with HQ, proactively developing communication with local regulators and attending inquiries and investigations accordingly;
- Oversee outside attorney activities, selection, review and hiring or terminating of outside counsel. Review billings for appropriate charges, and manage legal budget, reducing outside legal spend;
- Monitor and implement appropriate corporate governance procedures for legal entities in the country. Ensure that local legal requirements are complied with. Assist country operations with implementation of corporate changes;
- Manage nonclaims litigation as agreed with senior management. Coordinate with outside attorneys as necessary to define, implement and monitor the litigation strategy and the strength of legal position;
- handling the administrative law related legal issues pertaining to the participation by AIG to public tenders aimed at awarding insurance services;
- Manage the local legal team including recruiting, assessing, developing and monitoring day to day work activities.
What we're looking for:
- Experience in insurance companies or in law firms focusing on insurance law;
- Broad experience in legal matters, including litigation, corporate, data protection;
- Ability to develop relationships, interface and negotiate with a variety of outside contacts;
- Critical abilities include judgment, creativity, flexibility and initiative to analyze and guide corporate projects from a legal viewpoint;
- Pragmatic, business oriented, able to find solutions in complex situations, concern for detail and followup;
- Team leadership and management skills. Strong, proven project management abilities;
- Strong communication skills, with a clear and efficient communication style;
- Team player, good people skills, strong, disciplined, proactive, energetic, focused, hardworking;
- Fluency in English (written and spoken) and Italian and preferably one other European language.
